He was born onApril 1877 to Anne Jette Jensen of Krager or Skty and Kristian Andersen Nss of Grue, Norway. He was baptized as Karl Alfred Ingvald Nss onMay 1877 in the Garnison Menighet, in Oslo, Norway, but he always used the name Alfred Nss. His father, Christian, was an army sergeant. Alfred had two siblings Carl Albert Nss and Alvilde Marie Magdalene Nss who married Thorvald Martin Tandberg . Nss grew up in Vika. OnFebruary 1897 in Montreal, Canada, he competed against Canadian Jack McCulloch in the 1,500meter race, McCulloch and Nss tied, invoking a runoff. McCulloch won the runoff by twofifths of a second. Also onFebruary 1897 Nss equaled the world record of 46.8 seconds set by Wilhelm Mauseth onFebruary 1895 in Trondheim, Norway, but onFebruary 1897 the record was broken by Peder stlund with a time of 46.6. After Montreal he visited his sister in Portland, Maine, and gave a demonstration onFebruary 1897.
